The first visit

How
a first assessment works

Listening and history

The first meeting starts with a conversation. The story of the problem, scans and reports already done, work, sport, daily loads, what you have already tried and how it went. A great many functional diagnoses are built right here.

Functional assessment

Movement examination, orthopaedic and neurological tests, palpation. It is there to work out which structures are involved, which are not, and what is keeping the problem going. If the picture suggests something outside my scope, I tell you and refer you on.

Treatment and plan

Manual therapy and therapeutic exercise, dosed to the case. By the end of the first session you know how many sessions I expect, how often, and which signs we will use to decide whether it is working.

A written document, not just words

At the end of the assessment you leave with a document setting out the history, what I found and the plan of work, exercises included. It is for you, so you know what we are doing and why, and for any other professional who needs to read your case. It is the thing patients mention most often in their reviews.

Where it leads. The aim is that you stop coming: exercises to do at home, managing loads, what to do when the symptom returns. Treatment ends when you can manage your body without me.

The assessment is both physiotherapy and osteopathy: it is one appointment, not two different ones.

Area of special interest

Spine and pelvis

I trained in osteopathy at a school dedicated to the spine, with two and a half years of clinical placement at the Spine Center Project in Bologna. It is the region most of my patients come for and the one I work on most often: from acute pain through to post-neurosurgical rehabilitation.

These are the names people arrive with. Each one opens its entry on the body map, where you will find what it is called in today's literature and where the pain usually travels. The entries are in Italian.

The first step is working out where the problem comes from. That is exactly what the initial assessment is for, before any treatment.
